A Safe Region Is a Competitive Region
Opportunity Austin helps enable public safety in the Austin region by advocating for policies and partnerships that support a safe, stable and economically competitive community. We work closely with business leaders, elected officials and regional stakeholders to elevate employer concerns, identify challenges and support coordinated solutions. Public safety is essential to business retention, talent attraction, quality of life and the long-term vitality of the Austin region, particularly in key employment centers like downtown Austin.
Strengthening Support for First Responders
Opportunity Austin supports first responders by advocating for the policies and resources needed to strengthen public safety services across the Austin region. In 2024, OA supported the appointment of Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis and helped rally regional stakeholders in support of a long-term police contract designed to improve department stability, address staffing vacancies, support recruitment and retention, reduce officer burnout and improve response times. This work reflects OA’s commitment to ensuring first responders have the leadership, staffing and support needed to keep residents, workers, visitors and businesses safe.
Expanding Coordinated Care and Homelessness Response
Opportunity Austin supports coordinated, systems-based approaches to homelessness and mental health response that improve public safety, reduce strain on emergency services and connect people to the care they need. Through advocacy and partnerships with local, regional and state leaders, OA supports the expansion of initiatives like No Wrong Door, which help redirect individuals away from costly crisis-response systems and toward more effective community-based care. This work reflects OA’s belief that addressing homelessness is both a human priority and a regional competitiveness issue, supporting safer communities, healthier outcomes and a stronger business environment.
