Umbra Space: Advancing Earth Observation from Austin

Situation

Founded in 2015 by lifelong friends David Langan and Gabe Dominocielo in Santa Barbara, California, Umbra Space emerged as a pioneer in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite technology. Their innovative microsatellites, capable of capturing high-resolution imagery through clouds and at night, have positioned Umbra as a leader in Earth observation. Over the years, the company has expanded its presence to Austin, Texas, and Washington, D.C., to better serve its growing clientele and tap into diverse talent pools.

Why Austin?

Umbra’s decision to establish operations in Austin was driven by the city’s vibrant tech ecosystem, strategic location, and quality of life.  The founders were drawn to Austin’s unexpected greenery, dynamic culture, and welcoming community. The proximity to industry leaders like SpaceX and the state’s commitment to space innovation, exemplified by the establishment of the Texas Space Commission, further solidified Austin’s appeal.

Additionally, the city’s growing affordability and collaborative environment have made it an ideal hub for both seasoned professionals and emerging talent.

Austin feels like it’s in its freshman year—with incredible momentum and energy. The space industry is thriving here, and the community is all-in on supporting innovation.
