INSIGHTS

  • There were approximately 59,617 available job postings during the January 2025 reporting period, a decrease of 2,113 from 61,730 postings in December 2024. There were 21,461 first-time job postings, a decrease of 1,868 compared to the previous month. New job postings in January 2025 represented 36% of all available job postings, a 2% decrease from December 2024. New job postings decreased by 5% in the Austin and San Antonio metros, while the Houston and Dallas metros saw a decrease of less than 1% compared to the previous month.

  • Approximately 12%, or 7,416, of all available job postings during the January 2025 reporting period fell under Management Occupations, while 6,441 postings were in Healthcare Practitioners and Technical, and an additional 1,936 were in Healthcare Support. This combined total of 8,377 healthcare-related postings highlights the strong demand for healthcare talent in the region.

  • A total of 1,762 postings offered signing bonuses, a decrease of 77 compared to the previous month.

  • Fifty-six percent, or 33,208, of available job postings pay an annual median wage between $25,000 and $75,000. Of these, 48%, or 15,914, require a high school diploma as the entry-level education, while 16%, or 5,430, require at least a bachelor’s degree.

  • There are about 899 internship positions posted, both in-person and remote. The top three companies with the most internship postings are Amazon, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, and the State of Texas.

  • There were about 1,888 jobs posted within the Austin venture capital, startup, scaleup, and innovation ecosystem on the Austin Ecosystem Dealroom Platform as of January 12, 2025.

  • According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Austin MSA reported an unemployment rate of 3.1% in January 2025, reflecting a decrease of 0.4% from the prior month. The total number of unemployed individuals in the Austin MSA is approximately 46,400. In January 2025, there were 13,217 more available job postings than the number of unemployed individuals, an increase of 4,787 compared to the prior month.

  • In January 2025, the Austin region saw a total of 640 jobs announced through new relocations or expansion plans. Companies announcing new location plans included:

    • Coated Metals (Verona, WI) – 100 jobs
    • Element USA (Fort Lauderdale, FL) – 28 jobs
    • Enovis Surgical (Austin, TX) – 162 jobs
    • TransPak (Hayward, CA) – 275 jobs
    • OTC Industrial Tech (Columbus, OH)
    • re:3D (Houston, TX)

    The expansion list represents 237 new jobs, with contributions from companies such as Enovis Surgical, Uniform & Workplace Supplies, and e-commerce merchandising & fulfillment (HQd).

There were roughly 2% more available job postings in January 2025 than in January 2024. New job postings decreased by roughly 3% compared to the previous year.

For the top 20 job postings, 56% require some form of postsecondary education beyond high school as the typical entry-level education, and 55% pay an annual median salary over $65,000.

For all job postings under management occupations, 83% require a bachelor’s degree, or more, as the typical entry-level education. The top three postings in this category are General and Operations , Sales and Marketing managers.

For all job postings under tech occupations, 94% require a bachelor’s degree or more as the typical entry-level education. The top three postings in this category are Software Developers, Computer Occupations and Data Scientists. 

Top 10 Healthcare Job Postings and Annual Median Wages

For all job postings under healthcare occupations, 97% require some form of postsecondary education beyond high school as the typical entry-level education, and 71% require at least a bachelor’s degree. The top three job postings in this category are Registered Nurses, Health Technologists and Technicians, and Nurse Practitioners.

Top 10 Healthcare Support Job Postings and Annual Median Wages

For all job postings under Healthcare Support occupations, 93% required a postsecondary credential that is more than a high school diploma but less than an associate’s degree as the typical entry-level education. The top three job postings in this category are Home Health and Personal Care Aides, Medical Assistants, and Dental Assistants.

Top 20 Skills in Greatest Demand

The top three common skills in demand by employers include communication, customer service, and management, a reflection of the overall demand for talent in management occupations.

Top 20 Certifications in Greatest Demand

Twelve out of the top 20 in-demand certifications are healthcare-related with the largest demand for registered nurses, basic life support, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
