Electric vehicle and battery manufacturing is underway at Tesla’s Gigafactory Texas, a 10 million square foot factory on 2,400 acres in southeast Austin. Austin was designated the global headquarters of Tesla in 2021. 

Parts manufacturing in the Austin area includes CelLink Corp., Hyliion, Plastikon Industries, REE Automotive, Simwon America Corp., TASUS, US Farathane, and more.

Numerous companies are developing navigation, tracking and autonomous vehicle technologies in Austin including Bosch, Cruise, Einride, RASTRAC, Torc Robotics, and Uhnder.

General Motors has an innovation center in Austin working on factory systems and vehicle technology, as well as dealer and end-user applications.

NXP Semiconductors, a world leader in automotive solutions, has its U.S. headquarters, design, and two wafer manufacturing facilities in Austin. ARM, Cirrus Logic, Infineon, Samsung, and Skyworks Solutions are a few of the other chip companies working on automotive applications in Austin. 

The University of Texas at Austin has the No. 7 Best Engineering School in the U.S. according to U.S. News & World Report.

UT Austin faculty and research centers work closely with automobile makers to tackle pressing challenges of making vehicles more sustainable, connected and efficient. Texas State University’s engineering programs, community college programs, and manufacturing career and technical education (CTE) programs at area school districts also provide a pipeline of talent to the industry.

Texas is second only to Michigan in exports of motor vehicles and vehicle parts and Austin occupies a strategic location on the NAFTA corridor between manufacturers in Dallas (General Motors) and San Antonio (Toyota).
