The region’s economic prowess extends beyond tech, encompassing industries from health care to manufacturing and the creative arts. Thanks to a supportive ecosystem, including strong incubator programs and workforce development initiatives, businesses and initiatives flourish in Austin.

The surge of technology intersecting emerging industries

The establishment of Dell Medical School in 2013 marked a new era of potential for the region’s life sciences sector. With multiple incubators, venture capital firms and planned innovation districts, Austin is poised to become a hub for innovative biotech companies. Collaborative initiatives like ARPA-H further enhance the region’s position as a leader in health care innovation, driving breakthroughs in science, medicine and technology.

Fueled by a young, highly trained workforce and partnerships between the region’s higher education institutions and the private sector, Austin is a leader in semiconductor and electronics R&D and manufacturing. Many of the top computer and microchip firms have established major design and production centers in Austin. Samsung Austin Semiconductor actively engages in workforce development at all education levels, from GED to Ph.D., through partnerships with local institutions like Austin Community College and initiatives such as the Fab Apprentice Program and Technician/Pre-Engineering Institute, demonstrating a commitment to community investment and environmental stewardship while building for future resiliency. The region’s aerospace and defense cluster is also rapidly expanding, adding a new dimension to its established tech landscape. From modernizing U.S. Army technologies to space exploration, the Austin region is a global leader in aerospace education, research and innovation, making it an attractive location for aerospace and defense companies.

Army Futures Command (AFC) chose Austin as its headquarters in 2018 to ensure the Army and its soldiers remain at the forefront of technological innovation and warfighting ability. Firefly Aerospace, headquartered in nearby Cedar Park, continues to expand their manufacturing and test facilities to lead the way in space transportation on a mission to launch, land and operate in space anywhere, anytime.

Its economic growth has been staggering. With a GDP of $222 billion in 2022, Austin’s economy surpasses that of many major cities, according to Opportunity Austin data. With three of the fastest-growing cities in the U.S. located in Central Texas, Austin’s economic vitality and quality of life continue to attract families and businesses alike.
