OA 4.0 Wrap Up: Education & Talent

Under OA 4.0, the focus on education and talent has been a game-changer for the Austin Region’s workforce development. Opportunity Austin?s Education & Talent team has made significant strides in educational support and career readiness, ensuring the region’s economic vitality through a skilled labor force.

By helping students overcome post-secondary enrollment barriers, connecting them with in-demand career and workforce training, and filling the pipeline for local community college workforce programs, OA?s Education & Talent team is instrumental in ensuring that the Austin Region maintains its competitive edge as a leading hub of innovation and economic growth.

Direct-to-Work

OA?s Education & Talent team has strategically connected students to crucial workforce training, particularly targeting high-school students with no college application. By guiding these students into specialized programs at local community colleges, we can increase the talent pipeline for in-demand technical sectors such as advanced manufacturing, IT, healthcare, and skilled trades.

Key Achievements
  • Reached out to 2,600 graduates without college applications for career training enrollment.
  • Promoted workforce events in collaboration with ACC/TSTC and Make it Movement to raise awareness of technical career paths.
  • Engaged 33,105 Central Texans through the Make It Movement, surpassing the initial goal and setting the stage for continued success in workforce development.

Direct-to-College

A key initiative for OA 4.0 was supporting high-school students in overcoming college enrollment barriers. Through comprehensive FAFSA assistance, scholarship support, and help with meeting application deadlines, we have provided the tools for students to successfully navigate the journey to higher education. Our counselor support and tailored summer transition programs have smoothed the path for graduates, ensuring they are well-prepared to contribute to Austin’s innovative and skilled talent pool. By helping more students make their way to college, we are able to improve the workforce pipeline for employers who require candidates with college degrees.

Key Achievements:
  • OA partnered with schools and colleges to support FAFSA completion for 83,000 students, yielding $1.1 billion in scholarships, grants, and aid to help central Texas students fund postsecondary enrollment during OA 4.0. Since its inception in 2005, OA?s annual FAFSA Campaign helped increase student financial aid filings by 216%. Approximately 50,000 recent high school graduates received help throughout OA 4.0 and for those receiving text support, college enrollment improved by as much as 25 percentage points over those who did not receive texts/counselor outreach.
  • Supported 10,000 graduates with transition efforts, enhancing the regional talent pool.

Communicating & Supporting Industry Needs

Opportunity Austin provides local community colleges with insights into specific workforce needs so they can tailor their programs to equip students with the skills and knowledge required by local industries, enhancing employability and contributing to the overall economic prosperity of the community. Guiding individuals into these local community college workforce programs is essential for meeting specific job market needs, closing skills gaps, and fostering economic development. This strategic investment not only enhances employability but also reduces unemployment.

Our Contributions
  • Promoted in-demand jobs/careers by sharing our labor market reports with college/career advisors and higher education partners around Central Texas.
  • Supported ACC bonds to increase capacity for vital workforce programs.
  • Informed the development of local workforce programs through gathering direct-employer feedback, facilitating direct employer connections, and providing support for P-TECH (Pathways in Technology Early College High Schools).

Conclusion

As we wrap up OA 4.0 and reflect on the transformative initiatives that have taken place over the past 5 years, we stand proud of the dedication and strategic efforts of the Education & Talent team. Not only have we bridged gaps, but also paved pathways for tomorrow’s leaders, ensuring that a skilled, innovative, and dynamic workforce is ready to uplift and drive Austin’s economy to new heights.
