Austin’s growth story is tied to its renowned quality of life, blending cultural richness, iconic events like SXSW, ACL, and F1, and a strong sense of community. Opportunity Austin is dedicated to fostering an environment where the movement of people, goods, and services meets the demands of a growing region. By advocating for improved infrastructure, affordability, and public safety, OA ensures that the region’s development supports both residents and businesses, keeping Austin an attractive and thriving place to live and work.
Advancing Infrastructure and Mobility
In 2024, Opportunity Austin supported critical infrastructure milestones to keep pace with the region’s development. The I-35 Capital Express Central Project, now underway, will expand the highway through downtown Austin, reducing congestion and improving connectivity across the region. This generational project represents a cornerstone for maintaining Austin’s economic competitiveness.
The Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) also progressed with its Journey with AUS expansion program. The initiative added new international and domestic routes and launched terminal upgrades, elevating travel options while ensuring the airport remains a vital gateway for global commerce and tourism.
To support the workforce needs of these large-scale projects, The Austin Infrastructure Academy, backed by a $5 million contract with Workforce Solutions Capital Area provides job training, childcare support, and job placement assistance for high-demand roles in infrastructure and mobility-related sectors. Supported by Austin Water and Austin Energy, the academy is poised to become a national model for workforce development.
Enhancing Affordability and Community Resources
Affordability remained a key focus in 2024. The amendment to Austin Energy’s generation plan aimed to ensure reliable and cost-efficient energy solutions, balancing the city’s sustainability goals with the needs of residents and businesses.
For the first time outside of Greater Houston, the MD Anderson Cancer Center is expanding into Central Texas. This transformative facility will bring world-class cancer care closer to home, reducing the need for residents to travel for treatment. By strengthening the region’s healthcare infrastructure, it will enhance accessibility and affordability for lifesaving services.
Strengthening Public Safety
Opportunity Austin played an active role in supporting two significant milestones for public safety in 2024. The successful negotiation of the new Austin police contract reinforced the region’s commitment to safety and security for its rapidly growing population. This agreement reflects a balanced approach to public safety, ensuring residents feel protected while fostering trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve.
Additionally, we advocated for the appointment of Lisa Davis as Austin’s 11th Chief of Police. Davis, who brings extensive leadership experience and a commitment to transparency, offers a fresh perspective to the department. Her leadership is anticipated to enhance trust, collaboration, and community engagement, aligning with the city’s vision for a safer and more unified Austin.
Cultural and Lifestyle Highlights
In 2024, Austin’s cultural and business appeal reached new heights. The inaugural Texas MICHELIN Guide awarded the city 47 accolades—the most in Texas—including two Green Stars for Dai Due and Emmer & Rye.
Meanwhile, return-to-office trends underscored Austin’s business environment, with major employers like Dell and Amazon driving office occupancy rates higher than other metros.
Looking Ahead
As we enter 2025, Opportunity Austin will continue to advocate for policies that enhance the region’s quality of life. From advancing infrastructure projects to addressing affordability and supporting public safety, our efforts will focus on sustaining Austin’s growth and maintaining its unique appeal. This includes advocating for tax and incentive policies that foster a globally competitive business environment, providing local communities with tools to stimulate economic growth. In the upcoming legislative session, we aim to champion initiatives that strengthen our community and foster economic resilience.
