Expanding Global Partnerships
In 2024, Opportunity Austin worked to enhance the region’s connectivity to global markets, forging partnerships that create lasting opportunities for collaboration and growth. Key achievements included:
- Strengthening trade ties with the United Kingdom through discussions with the UK Trade Envoy, focusing on life sciences, technology, and venture capital.
- Joining the Governor’s Office in India to showcase Texas’ economy and position Austin as an attractive destination for investment.
- Hosting a roundtable with Korean ambassadors to explore semiconductor industry growth and expand support for Korean companies in the Austin region.
- Establishing Memorandums of Understanding with Belgium and the Czech Republic to connect Austin’s innovation ecosystem with European tech and life sciences hubs.
- Leading Austin’s delegation in the sister city agreement with Limerick, Ireland, and hosting a roundtable discussion with Limerick’s mayor, underscoring our commitment to international collaboration.
Additionally, Opportunity Austin hosted a record 80 international delegations this year and led outbound trips to Qatar, Spain, Panama, Korea, and Taiwan to further position Austin on the global stage.
Global Stage at SXSW
Austin’s premier cultural and innovation event, SXSW, served as a dynamic platform for connecting the region to international partners. Opportunity Austin engaged in 48 events as hosts, partners, and sponsors, engaging delegations from 22 countries. These interactions showcased Austin’s innovation-driven economy, underscoring the city’s role as a catalyst for global entrepreneurship and investment.
Celebrating Local Entrepreneurship
Austin’s growing recognition as a global leader in entrepreneurship was highlighted during the 13th Annual A-LIST Awards. This signature event celebrated the region’s thriving startup ecosystem and its contributors, including Tyson Tuttle, honored as Ecosystem Leader of the Year, and Verisoul, winner of the People’s Choice Award. These events amplify Austin’s appeal to international investors and entrepreneurs, solidifying the region’s reputation as a center for innovation.
Driving Investment and Innovation
The expansion of the Austin Ecosystem Platform in partnership with Dealroom.co marked a key milestone in Opportunity Austin’s efforts to enhance the region’s investment landscape. This platform connects startups, investors, and job seekers, fostering collaboration and highlighting Austin’s competitive advantages to a global audience. Additionally, the launch of the Capital Growth Sub-Council bolstered efforts to attract foreign direct investment and align Austin’s global strategy with regional economic priorities.
Semiconductor Leadership
Opportunity Austin reinforced Austin’s leadership in the semiconductor industry by hosting the JETRO delegation, which brought together 19 Japanese semiconductor companies. The event spotlighted the Texas CHIPS Act and the region’s state-supported R&D investments, further cementing Austin’s status as a global leader in semiconductors and advanced manufacturing.
