New Report from Opportunity Austin Details How Austin’s Innovation Ecosystem Provides Competitive Edge in Life Sciences

Already one of the fastest growing emerging life sciences hubs in the nation, Central Texas is expected to benefit from significant growth and investment within the next decade.

AUSTIN, TEXAS – June 20, 2024 —  Today, Opportunity Austin released its new Life Sciences Report, which unveils key findings about what makes the Austin region one of the fastest-growing emerging life sciences hubs in the country. With a unique blend of robust venture capital networks, a thriving startup culture and substantial research funding, Central Texas has an unparalleled competitive edge in the life sciences industry.

Conducted by McKinsey & Company, the report takes a deep dive into the many ways in which Austin’s innovation ecosystem has helped attract and nurture life science companies to date, as well as the significant new planned investments that are likely to catalyze robust growth in the coming decade.

“Austin has been laying the groundwork to become a leader in the life sciences sector for years, and our region has proven we have the capital, innovative mindset, and skilled workforce necessary to foster a prosperous scientific community,” said Ed Latson, CEO of Opportunity Austin. “We are energized by the findings of this report and will continue to do all we can to help nurture and grow this critical sector.”

The Austin area boasts four key strengths that make it the ideal fit for a full-scale life sciences ecosystem:

1. Clusters and partners.

Currently home to nearly 300 life sciences companies that employ more than 21,000 people, the region is already well on its way to becoming a full-scale hub. In addition to industry giants like ICU Medical, XBiotech and Natera, the region is also home to more than 1,000 life sciences startups.

Coupled with the state’s pro-business environment and new incentives for medical manufacturing equipment, life sciences businesses in Austin are primed for success.

2. Research and development capital.

Ranked #6 in VC funding per capita in the United States, emerging life sciences companies located in the Austin region benefit from some of the nation’s most robust funding networks and accelerators, with more than $440 million in VC funding invested in healthcare devices in the past five years.

The Austin region thrives as a hub of research and innovation, with approximately $1 billion in research funding flowing through the region’s academic and corporate institutions. Over the past three years, more than 350 life sciences patents have been issued, further cementing the area’s growing reputation as a leader in scientific advancement.

3. Real estate and infrastructure.

One of the challenges facing life science companies is simply the availability of space — from manufacturing facilities to high-specialized wet labs. The Austin area already has more than 4 million square feet in life sciences space, with an additional 1 million square feet under development, giving companies ample room to grow their footprint or relocate.

4. Talent and workforce.

Austin’s highly educated workforce, with 53% holding a bachelor’s degree or higher, is a key asset supporting its life sciences sector, ranking the city #4 among the top 50 U.S. metropolitan areas in educational attainment. The region’s over 20 colleges and universities offer robust programs in life sciences and healthcare, including the University of Texas’s top 10 ranked College of Pharmacy and Texas State University’s highly-ranked nursing program.

As Opportunity Austin continues to champion the life sciences sector, the insights from this study serve as a roadmap for future growth and development. With its strong foundation and robust innovation network, the Austin region is poised to solidify its status as a leading life sciences hub, creating new opportunities for years to come.
